Hubby just gave me a paper clipping with these fascinating coffee facts... comments in brackets are my own remarks.
- The most expensive coffee is Kopi Luwak, from Sumatra, made from beans eaten and excreted by a civet cat. It costs around £500 a kilogram. (And who would want to drink that anyway?!)
- Research has shown that people who drink coffee are less likely to commit suicide than people who don't.
- The coffee filter was invented in 1908 by a German housewife, Melitta Benz, when she lined a tin cup with blotting paper to filter the coffee grinds.
- A 100g jar of roast ground coffee costs £1.30, yet an Ethiopian coffee farmer gets 7p for the beans. (That is SO wrong)
- In the 16th Century, turkish women could divorce their husbands if the man failed to keep his familt's pot filled with coffee. (*Snickers* I love that...)
- Last month German police were mystified when thieves broke into a car showroom and stole the coffee machine. "The coffee machine was a pretty good one," police said, "but not worth as much as a new car."
- McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois, offers a course on coffee.
- Britain's three favourite smells are fresh bread, fried bacon and coffee.
- Research shows that people spend most on coffee in restaurants where classical music is being played.
- Finns drink more coffee that any other nation.
