Title: A Most Unusual Elf
Author: Tuxedo Elf
Rating: G
Characters: Gildor, Orophin
Summary: A new Elf arrives in Lothlorien and makes quite an impression.
Notes: This may be the start of a series, I'm not sure yet.
Orophin eyed the newcomer suspiciously. It was an Elf, but the most unusual Elf he had ever seen. His clothes were worn and patched, his boots looked like they were barely holding together – and he was wearing a hat – a big, floppy hat. Until a moment ago, Orophin had never seen an Elf in a hat… they were a fashion of men, or so he thought.
“Good day!” The Elf greeted them cheerfully as they dropped from the trees. He did not seem at all perturbed by the sudden appearance of half a dozen well-armed warriors.
“Good day,” Orophin echoed politely. “I am Orophin of Lórien, a guardian of these woods. Who might you be?”
“I am Gildor, of nowhere in particular.” The other grinned. “I have come to see the Lady Galadriel.”
Orophin looked disdainfully at the scruffy Elf. He never looked so dishevelled, not even after battle, he was sure. He could not even imagine taking him to the Lady in that state, though he had no reason to refuse him entry into the realm.
“I see. Well, come with us and I will arrange for a bath and some fresh clothes – then I will escort you to the Lady.”
Gildor chuckled, shaking his head. “There is no need for that! My cousin has seen far worse, I assure you!”
It was not lost on Orophin that Gildor claimed to be Galadriel’s kin, but he did not concern himself with it. “I do not care if you are the cousin of Manwë himself – I am not letting you into the Lady’s presence in that condition. Either you bathe and change, or you go on your way. It is your choice.” He stood defensively in front of the new arrival.
Gildor looked surprised at Orophin’s insistence, but shrugged. It was not worth being turned away over, though he rarely met anyone who got the best of him.
“As you wish…” He replied easily. “Lead on!” Amused by Orophin’s glare, he allowed himself to be led away.
***********
Hours later, bathed and in clean, new clothes, the wandering Elf was finally presented to the Lady Galadriel.
“Gildor!” The Lady greeted him with delight, embracing him warmly. “How good to see you again!” Stepping back, she looked him over approvingly. “You look very well – and if I may say so, remarkably well presented! Whatever happened?”
Gildor laughed. “I was rather more unkempt when I arrived here! You have stubborn guards, cousin; the one I met refused to so much as let me enter the realm until I agreed to bathe!”
“They have high standards,” she chuckled, amused. “Tell me, who was it?”
“An Elf by the name of Orophin,” Gildor said. “He was most insistent!”
Galadriel did not look surprised, though she nodded. “Ah yes… he is a good guardian. His stubbornness likely stems from his having two older brothers, he is used to having to stand his ground!”
“Like someone else I know!” Gildor teased, ignoring her glare. He knew her well and was not troubled by the things that made others cringe. “I wonder if I shall see him again. He was – a most unusual Elf.”
