Chapter 11
Orophin peered into the distance, along the tree-lined path. He was on patrol with the twins and they had just noticed the group of riders heading towards them. However they were still too far away for him to see who they were.
“They’re definitely heading for Imladris.” Elladan commented. “Shall we ride on and meet them?”
Both Elrohir and Orophin nodded their assent, so the three riders made their way towards the oncoming party.
It was not long until they got close enough to see the faces of the travellers and Orophin got a most welcome surprise as he saw who was leading the party.
“Haldir!” Orophin’s voice filled with joy as he beheld his brother, strong and well. He hadn’t seen him since the day he’d left Lórien with the twins, when he’d been almost comatose in bed and Orophin had feared he would lose both Rúmil and Haldir to Mandos’ Halls.
He dismounted and ran towards his brother, unable to keep the huge grin off of his face. Haldir’s feet touched the ground just in time for Orophin to sweep him into a crushing embrace.
Haldir clung to his brother, overjoyed to see him again. He knew he’d been terribly unfair to Orophin, treating him as if he was loved less than Rúmil. Now at last he would have the chance to tell him that nothing was further from the truth and to apologise for almost depriving him of both his brothers.
“I’ve missed you.” He said quietly, heedless of the amused glances from the rest of his patrol.
“As I have you,” Orophin replied with a smile. “But come, I know you’re anxious to see Rúmil.”
“Aye, I am.” Haldir replied. “But he is not the only one I have been worried about.” He looked meaningfully at Orophin.
“I know, Haldir.” Orophin could see the guilt in his brother’s eyes and sought to reassure him. Now was not the time for that discussion. “Do not worry; we will have plenty of time to talk.”
Haldir still looked uncertain, so Orophin decided to change the subject so he could deal with it when they were alone. He turned to the twins, who had dismounted and were waiting patiently behind him, and motioned them forward.
“Haldir, these are Lord Elrond’s sons, Elladan and Elrohir.” They bowed at the introduction, as did Haldir, but he did not miss the way Orophin looked at Elladan. He smiled slightly to himself; he would question Orophin on that later! But at least he had been accepted here, despite being from another realm.
“It is a pleasure to meet you.” Elladan said. “Please, follow us back to Imladris.” Haldir nodded, giving a couple of quiet commands to his patrol as he mounted again. Together the small group rode back to Imladris, Haldir staying close by Orophin’s side.
*******************
Lindir lay on his back on the bed, writhing and moaning as Rúmil trailed butterfly kisses down his bare torso. His lover was teasing him mercilessly, as the kisses moved lower and lower down his body. He gasped, his hands fisting in the sheets.
Rúmil smirked as he continued his task. He had crept up on Lindir in the bedroom and was now thoroughly enjoying himself with his shocked minstrel. He already had Lindir’s robe off and was about to go to work on his leggings, when his plans were suddenly interrupted.
“Rúmil!” Orophin rushed into the room, without so much as knocking. “You will never guess who has just arrived! I… Oh.” He trailed off as his eyes at last registered what he had just walked in on. “Sorry.” He smiled nervously as Rúmil gave him a look that could have melted glaciers.
Flushed and embarrassed, Lindir sat up, giving Orophin a glare of his own.
“I assume you have a good reason for barging in?” He asked, as he tried to compose himself. Immediately, Orophin brightened again.
“Yes! Oh Rúmil, I am sorry for interrupting you, but I have wonderful news! Haldir is here!”
Rúmil’s eyes opened wide as he stared at Orophin. There had been no word of this! His brother grinned.
“I was surprised too – but he is here and very anxious to see you!”
Turning, Rúmil looked to Lindir, who nodded.
“Go, we can finish this later!” He was smiling, despite the interruption, for he knew how much Rúmil had missed his older brother.
Leaning over, Rúmil kissed Lindir deeply, before jumping up and looking expectantly at Orophin.
“He’s just outside the main entrance.” Orophin said. That question was obvious. He grinned as Rúmil hugged him briefly and rushed out of the room.
Rúmil ran outside, both eager and nervous about seeing Haldir again. His mind was full of memories of the last time he’d seen him, the morning he’d left on that patrol. How he’d hugged him and said goodbye, never realising he’d spoken his last words to his brother. He knew they would have to rebuild their relationship, as he’d had to with Orophin, and he hoped that Haldir would accept this.
************
Waiting in the main courtyard, Haldir looked up as a movement caught his eye. His heart stopped when he saw Rúmil running towards him. He stood stock still, until his brother finally reached him and threw himself into his arms.
It was in that moment that Haldir’s heart truly healed. Now he had Rúmil in his arms all the doubts vanished. He really was alive, something he had been unable to completely believe until this moment.
He held his brother close, feeling Rúmil’s breath on his neck and his heart beating.
“I’ve missed you so much.” He whispered, tightening his grip.
Rúmil laid his head on Haldir’s shoulder, his arms wrapped around his brother’s back. He had missed Haldir too; it was so good to see him again. He forced himself not to dwell on all the things he wanted to say.
At last, Rúmil eased himself out of Haldir’s embrace, looking closely at his brother. He was thinner than Rúmil remembered and a bit pale – clearly he had been ill. He would have to find out about that later. Still, he was here now, that was the important thing. He smiled warmly and let Haldir look him over, as he had done a moment ago.
“You look well.” Haldir said; his voice hoarse with emotion. Something caught his eye and he reached out, carefully touching the long scar on Rúmil’s neck. “Does it hurt?” He asked quietly, looking to his brother. Rúmil shook his head, trying to reassure Haldir. There was no pain anymore. He smiled softly, moving Haldir’s hand away from his neck.
Feeling suddenly awkward, Haldir searched for something to say or do. He hated that his own brother felt like a stranger and he hoped that feeling would fade in time.
It was with a great sense of relief that he remembered Celeborn’s letters.
“I have a message for you from Lord Celeborn.” He said, rummaging in his pack for the scroll.
Producing the rolled parchment from the depths of his pack, he handed it to Rúmil with a smile on his face. He was sure that the news would please Rúmil.
Curious as to what his Lord wished to tell him, Rúmil took the scroll and untied it, revealing the message within.
As he took in the neatly written words, his heart sank. Lord Celeborn was calling him home. He felt his newly-rebuilt life crumble around him, as he continued to stare at the letter. He loved Lothlórien, yes, but it did not have the one who had become most dear to him. It did not have Lindir.
Not yet accustomed to having to read his brother’s emotions, Haldir failed to notice that Rúmil was less than pleased about the news.
“Isn’t it wonderful?” He said, smiling. “We get to go home at last – together!”
Forcing a smile, Rúmil nodded at his brother and then, before Haldir could say another word, he turned and fled.
****************
“Thaliatar...” The elf turned to see Lord Elrond standing behind him.
“Yes, my Lord?” He whispered.
Elrond looked sadly at Thaliatar. “It has been many months now. We have tried everything, yet Mellachion has not woken. I say this only after deep consideration, but it may be time to send him to Mandos halls, where he can find peace.”
Thaliatar looked at Elrond with undisguised horror.
“Please, my lord, no!”
The lord of Imladris laid his hand on Thaliatar’s shoulder.
“This cannot go on, my friend. It is not fair to him – or to you. As a healer I must do what is best for my patients – and I no longer believe that it is in his best interests to keep him thus.” He spoke gently but truthfully, knowing how much pain his words were causing the other elf.
The guard looked up at Elrond, his brown eyes overflowing with fear and desperation.
“Please, my lord, I beg you – do not give up on him yet. Just give him a little more time!”
Inwardly, Elrond sighed. More time would not help, but if that was what was needed to let Thaliatar say goodbye, then so be it.
“I will give him one more week. If he has not woken by then, he must be released into Mandos’ care.”
Thaliatar nodded, as he fought to control his emotions. Even he knew that his lover was unlikely to wake up, but accepting that he would have to say goodbye was harder than he could ever have imagined.
Sensing that the guard needed some time to himself, Elrond left, wondering why the ones who always deserved it least, were always the ones who seemed to suffer the most.
*****************
Rúmil sat on the bed in their rooms, the letter from Lord Celeborn in his hands. He was not reading it though – he had read it already and the contents were burned into his mind. It was time for him to return home.
It was true he had missed Lothlórien terribly and would be glad to see the golden leaves again, but that would mean leaving Lindir. The very thought of leaving his lover was heartbreaking. But he was still in Lord Celeborn’s service, while Lindir was in Lord Elrond’s. It seemed hopeless.
Lindir had heard that Rúmil had received a letter from Lórien’s lord and had tracked Rúmil down again as soon as possible. He entered the room expecting to find Rúmil happy, so was not prepared for the dejected figure that met his eyes.
“Rúmil?” He hurried over to his lover’s side. “What is wrong?”
Rúmil made no move to write anything down, instead he handed Lindir the letter Lord Celeborn had sent him.
As Rúmil’s had done, Lindir’s heart sank as he read the letter. The instructions were clear – Rúmil and Orophin were to return by the next cycle of the moon. He had less than thirty days left before Rúmil would go back to Lórien.
“I will miss you.” He whispered softly, as Rúmil’s arms pulled him into a strong embrace. The Galadhrim held him possessively and Lindir knew this would be very hard on both of them.
*****************
“He looked so upset.” Haldir said to Orophin. “I would have thought he would be happy to be going home at last. Yet he seems almost desperate not to. I do not understand – I know things will not be easy, but Rúmil has never been one to run from his problems.”
Orophin sighed. “It is not that he does not wish to return home. He loves Lórien; you know that. But he also loves another – one who resides here and who he does not wish to leave behind.”
Haldir looked surprised. “He is in love? With who?” He had been told little of Rúmil, save that he was alive and healing.
“His name is Lindir; he is Elrond’s chief minstrel. It is he, not I, who is mostly responsible for Rúmil’s recovery.” Orophin looked away, his eyes full of sadness. “I could not help him anymore than I could help you.”
Haldir drew Orophin into a tight embrace.
“Do not say that. I know things have been hard for you, but you must not blame yourself. This is bigger than any one elf; many have helped Rúmil – not just Lindir. You have been a crucial element in his recovery, of this I am sure.
I am so sorry for the pain I caused you, but know that had it been you I thought was dead, I would have felt the same grief.” He desperately hoped that Orophin believed him – he truly did love his youngest brother and it broke his heart to think that Orophin might doubt that.
Seeing the worry on his brother’s face, Orophin had to forgive Haldir for planting the doubts in his heart. It would take a while for those feelings to completely vanish, but Elladan had already healed much of his pain and Orophin felt strong enough now to move past whatever uncertainty still lingered.
“I know, brother.” He said, smiling softly. “Please do not worry; I bear you no ill will.”
The look of relief on Haldir’s face made Orophin smile and made a little more of the remaining doubt disappear. In time, it would be all but forgotten.
Then something caught his eye and he grinned, calling to Haldir as he pointed out of the window, which faced the gardens.
“Look.” He said softly.
Haldir followed Orophin’s directions and glanced out of the window. In the garden he saw Rúmil – but he was not alone. He was walking hand-in-hand with a fair-haired, slender elf.
“I take it that elf is Lindir?” He said. Orophin nodded.
“Aye, he is. He is a kind and gentle soul, though he has a brave heart when need be. He is exactly what Rúmil needs – I am sad that they will soon have to part.”
Haldir reached out and squeezed his brother’s hand.
“But he won’t be the only one leaving someone behind – will he?” He asked; his expression knowing.
Orophin let out a short, bitter laugh.
“No… I will have to leave Elladan also. But I cannot say how much I wish that were not so.” He paused, looking down at the floor. “I – I love him Haldir, more than I have ever loved another – save you and Rúmil, though that is a different love. I dread the day we leave more than I can say.”
Without hesitation, Haldir pulled Orophin into a comforting hug. His own heart however, was heavy.
He had been so happy to be coming here, but now part of him wished that he had stayed in Lothlórien. He knew it was not him, but rather the news he had carried that was causing the pain, but still he felt guilty. They had all suffered so much and it seemed it was still not over. He wondered if it ever would be.
“I wish I could spare you both that pain.” He whispered, tightening his hold on his brother.
“I know,” Orophin replied, smiling softly. “But you cannot. We will simply have to be strong and make the most of this last month together.”
