Fading Hope

He couldn’t believe it, how could this have happened? It had only been a tiny cut and he had tended to it with all due care and attention.

Yet somehow it had still become infected and now the child’s tiny body was wracked with fever.

Elrond knelt by Estel’s bed, holding the tiny hand in his as the boy’s breathing became shallower.

The elf-lord’s shoulders shook as he cried, tears for his own failings and the life of the small boy who had so easily taken hold of his heart, who was like a son to him.

He couldn’t bear to lose him, not now, not like this. It was too soon, he had too much to do! Elrond’s heart was heavy; would a simple oversight rob the world of its greatest hope?

“Forgive me,” he whispered through his tears, losing all dignity and reserve in the face of this terrible loss. “I love you, my son.”

With a hand that trembled, he placed his palm on the child’s forehead, praying that he might find rest swiftly.

And then Estel opened his eyes.

The End

I have long been part of the 'Mellon Chronicles' LOTR list. It was the first group I joined when I got into the fandom. The list-mums, Cassia and Sio, wrote a series of very popular non-slash stories mainly featuring Aragorn and Legolas.

I used to love these stories. Some of them, I still do. But in recent fics I have seen repetitiveness of plot and slower postings. I wondered if they were running out of steam. (Unavoidable really, when you confine yourselves to a single series.)That aside my interest had waned a while ago, after I got more into Lorien Elves and then later slash.

They were. They announced the posting of their final fic the other day along with the news that they were stepping down as List-Mums. The reactions to this were... interesting.

Most people assumed they were leaving the list entirely, which isn't what they said. Others actually *cried* and some gave resons for loving the list that, quite frankly, I have a hard time believing.

But then, the list isn't what it used to be. I've posted before about the intolerance of some list members towards anyone who isn't a devout Catholic, or who dares to like slash.

With all the above in mind, the ending of this series bothers me very little. Yes, it was good while it lasted and yes I made some of my best friends there. I am grateful for the warm welcome I got into the famdom there. But the list will remain and hopefully, so will my friends. I know most of them on IM now anyway.

This post is not meant to disrespect Cassia, Sio, or their stories. But as they themselves said, things change. I have and I think that's why I may not see these more recent changes as anything more than something to think about.
