Title: Come What May
Author: Tuxedo Elf
Pairing: Rúmil/Thranduil (Implied)
Rating: PG
Prompt: 008: Do not touch the water!
Summary: Thranduil finally gets news from Lothlórien. Sequel to Clouds of Change and Belief.

Thranduil cast the quill aside with a sweep of his hand, sending it flying from the desk and onto the stone floor. Leaving it where it fell, the King abandoned the stuffy office and made his way back to his rooms.

Once there he called for tea and went out onto the balcony. The scent of spring was truly in the air now and he delighted in it after the long oppression that had hung over the forest. He had no wish to be cooped up when the day was so glorious and he was unable to concentrate anyway. His mind was continually drifting to his lover, from whom he had still not heard, despite the war ending several weeks ago.

Galion entered with the tea and set down the tray next to the king. He still ate very little, but the butler had added some pastries to the tray anyway, in hope. Going to the fire, he brought a kettle of boiling water back to the table.

Absently, Thranduil reached for the kettle, thinking it was the teapot, only to have his hand smacked away by Galion. “Do not touch the water!” Galion snapped, irritated by Thranduil’s complete lack of attention. “You will scald yourself and I have not even made the tea yet!”

“Sorry,” Thranduil mumbled, smiling slightly. In public he had managed to retain a respectable image, but in private his thoughts overtook him, until little else existed.

Shaking his head in despair, Galion added the hot water to the pot and the smell of tea drifted through the room. Once brewed, he set a cup in front of the king and stepped back quietly.

No sooner had he raised the cup to his lips than a messenger burst in, his face flushed with excitement. Only just managing not to drop the cup, Thranduil turned to see who had so rudely interrupted him.

“Forgive my abruptness my lord, but I thought you should know right away! A rider is coming – from Lothlórien! He is almost at our gates!”

His irritation and the tea forgotten, Thranduil wasted no time. He brushed past Galion and the messenger and hurried through the palace, barely maintaining his dignity. At last… he could not keep the smile from his face. Rúmil had returned to him at last.

He hurried into the courtyard just as the rider was dismounting. The Galadhel’s booted feet touched the ground and he turned to the king.

The smile vanished from Thranduil’s lips and the colour drained from his face. His heart, which had been pounding in anticipation suddenly clenched with fear as he beheld the grim countenance of the Elf before him.

OK, it may possibly need a sequel... *Ahem*

Title: The Riddle’s Heart
Author: Tuxedo Elf
Rating: PG
Prompt: 037 - I see strange tales are woven about you.
Summary: Rúmil seeks answers.

Rúmil had been watching him for weeks now. He had found the Elf beautiful from the moment he laid eyes on him, but it was the mystery surrounding him that had Rúmil captivated. Try as he might, he had been unable to discover if the rumours were true or simply the product of over-active imaginations.

His patience had eventually worn thin and so he had decided to go to the source. He was prepared to be rebuffed and told to leave well enough alone, but he was determined to try anyway. If nothing else, he would at least make his existence known to the other.

He had chosen his moment carefully, waiting until he could catch him alone. Weeks of careful observation had revealed the best time and now he was ready. Stepping up behind the lone figure, he spoke. "I see strange tales are woven about you."

The figure turned slowly, seemingly unsurprised by his sudden appearance. "Are they now?"

"They are," Rúmil replied evenly, though he was unnerved by the intense look he was getting.

"And what do the tales say?"

"They say you are old – older even that Glorfindel and Elrond. That you walked with Melian in Doriath and saw the flames from Gondolin as it burned. That you witnessed the changing of the world and helped to map it anew." He stood his ground, even as he worried he had said too much.

The other looked at him intently, though gave nothing away. "Do you believe these tales?"

"I have found no reason to believe or disbelieve," Rúmil said. "There is little evidence either way. You are the only one who can reveal the truth, so I have come to you."

"I see. So you come to me to learn the truth of my past, since I am such a curiosity?"

Rúmil looked slightly uncomfortable for a moment. "In part…"

Eyebrows raised in interest, the first sign of emotion he had shown. "Only in part? What is the rest then, I wonder?"

Head held high, Rúmil pressed on. "They also say that, if you are indeed that old, you would not have any interest in an Elf so very much younger." He looked into the eyes that did, unless he was imagining it, seem to be very old. "Will you answer my questions?"

Chuckling now, amused by the other’s boldness, Lindir shook his head. "Nay, not yet. Though if you persist, you may find some answers come easier than others."

Summary: Thranduil is having a problem with his lover.
Notes: I was bored. This is silly.

“I see.” Thranduil perched on the edge of the bed, looking at the lump beneath the blankets and considered his options. “So, do you simply plan to stay there forever?”

The King of Mirkwood put his head in his hands. “That is slightly impractical, you know.”

“I do not care.”

“There are all sorts of things you will miss out on,” he cajoled.

“I can not think of a single thing.”

The muffled responses were most unhelpful and the King was running out of ideas. He loved this Elf, however he was starting to find out a few of the problems associated with a long-distance relationship, such as leaving day.

“It will work out. We will see each other again in a few months. It is not so bad.”

“Yes it is.”

“Very well, it is. I agree. Yet this does not make it anymore unavoidable.” Thranduil was starting to wonder if their whole last day was going to be spent in this manner. “This is getting rather silly. I was awake early this morning, and now it must be nearly noon. I have not even seen your face in all that time!”

He received no response from this statement and so poked the blankets lightly. “Do not make me come in there after you!”

The blankets moved, lifted and a moment later Rúmil appeared from beneath them, his hair rumpled and a cheeky grin on his face as he stretched lazily.

“Perhaps that is what I want.”

Thranduil had only one response to that.

He pounced.

Prompt: 11 -The chamber was filled with a soft light; its walls were green and silver and its roof of gold.
Word Count: 282
Notes: Set in the Duty's Call universe.

Glorfindel quietly observed the impressive suite of rooms that Lord Elrond had given him. It was easy to see that before his arrival the rooms had been reserved for visiting dignitaries. The main room was light and airy with large carved windows and the bedchamber was filled with soft light; its walls were green and silver and its roof was gold. They were elaborate and attractively furnished yet still impersonal and utterly lacking in character.

He had not brought much with him from Valinor - indeed he had not had a great deal to bring. All of his possessions had been lost when Gondolin fell and he had not been reborn long enough to acquire a great deal again. All he had were a few clothes, some small trinkets and a couple of books. And one more special possession that could change things for the better.

He moved across the room, going to the wooden trunk in the corner that contained all he had brought with him. Pushing aside the few items that remained he reached to the bottom for a carefully-tied bundle of fabric and pulled it out.

Hoisting it under one arm, he selected one of the bland tapestries that hung on the wall and swiftly pulled it down, casting it carelessly aside. Unrolling the fabric he held, he deftly hung it in the now empty space. To his delight he found his guess had been correct and that it fit perfectly.

Stepping back, he admired the colour and design of the banner of the House of the Fountain that now adorned his wall. It seemed to him that the whole room was brightened by its presence.

Better. Much better.

Title: Left Behind

Prompt: 035 He felt as if the whole dark world was turning upside down.
Word Count: 345
Rating: PG13
Summary: The aftermath of the battle of Helms Deep.
Author's Notes: Movie-verse!

The desolation before him stretched for miles, dark, torn earth, stained with blood both red and black. Strange shapes littered the land, twisted, deformed remnants of things that had once been living beings. Those that had been Orcs he did not care for – but some had been Men… and some had been Elves.

As if in a dream he walked amongst them, the smell of death still fresh on the air. His heart died a little more with every body and every face he recognised.

By the body of an Elf he paused, fighting back tears as he gazed upon the torn body of one who he’d long called friend. With a shaking hand he knelt and removed an ornate clip from the bloodied hair, determined to bear it back to his friend’s family.

Standing again, he uttered a soft prayer before moving away, continuing his lonely walk. So many had been lost and he felt as if the whole dark world was turning upside down. Nothing would ever be the same again – it could not possibly be.

A flash of colour caught his eye – a strip of red fabric caught on a rock. He froze, reaching out for it, pulling it from the rock and letting it rest in his hand. Then the tears did fall, the magnitude of his loss hitting him like the crumbled wall of the keep. He knew Haldir was dead – he had seen the broken body, borne away by some of the other surviving Elves. They would return him to Lórien, lay him to rest in the land he loved.

But he had not found Orophin and discovered that he feared to do so. Feared to find what was left, to have another memory stained by a desecrated body. Better not to know, to remember his brother as he had been not long ago – alive, vibrant and laughing.

Yet, as he stood alone in the carnage, seeing nothing but bodies from horizon to horizon and feeling the dampness on his cheeks, he wondered if it wasn’t already too late.

“I am sorry, Rúmil.” Orophin wrapped his arms around his older brother, pulling him close as the other began to tremble. He rubbed his arm soothingly as Rúmil closed his eyes against the onslaught of emotions. Haldir stood next to them, his eyes full of compassion as he gazed upon Rúmil.

After a time Rúmil seemed to regain control of himself and pulled slightly away from Orophin, taking a long breath. “I knew this day would come,” he said quietly. “We both did.”

“Yet not so soon,” Haldir replied gently.

“No,” Rúmil admitted, his head dropping with the weight of his pain. “Not so soon. It is barely even summer – we were supposed to stay until winter.” He smiled ruefully. “It is my fault, I suppose, for falling so hard for one who is destined to break my heart.”

“Things change, we are needed at home,” Haldir said, thought he was aware that Rúmil knew this. “Yet it is not the end – you can send letters and maybe visit again when the borders are safer.”

However, Rúmil shook his head. “No… this has to stop. I do not wish to fade but if I allow this to continue, the final parting will kill me. It is already hard enough, but there is no other way out that I can see or think of.”

“Nor I,” admitted Orophin. “I wish there was.”

“As do I,” Haldir agreed. “Do what you must, my brother.”

Nodding slowly, Rúmil rose. “Thank you both,” he said. “I love you.” Giving them both a small smile, he left their guestrooms in the mortal kingdom of Rohan. Once outside he glanced briefly at his surroundings and then went to find its Prince, to say goodbye to the young man who had stolen his heart.
